JACKIE COOPER JUNIOR ACADEMY
The Jackie Cooper Junior Academy has undergone a major revision under the direction of Head Pro, Rod Suarez. The Academy includes two days of instruction and two days of organized match play. In addition, there are special appearances from both Rosie Casals for serve & volley instruction and Jackie Cooper for match play coaching.
The aim of the program is to develop tournament players that can compete on a national scale. The match play component of this program gives it a distinct difference from any other program in the desert. With family or junior membership, match play is included for all juniors. Private lessons are available by reservation. The week wraps up with a fun Tennis Pizaa Night on Friday. It starts at 5:30 p.m. with a clinic and match play, followed at 7:30 p.m. with pizza and ping-pong.
Clinics are available for everyone from tots to tournament players. The Junior Academy program is available to both members and non-members. Save 10% on monthly rates. Drop-in rates available. Junior memberships are $200 per year. For more information on programs and lessons, call (760) 822-4194.
Jackie Cooper Tennis Club & Academy is excited to share the news of the current happenings at the club.
You will notice that several club improvements have been made or are in the progress.
The Pro Shop has been beautifully remodeled with the addition of the Tennis Channel. We offer racquet stringing, balls, snacks and beverages for sale. In addition to the water fountains on each quadrant, we have ice available near Center Court. Additional windscreens and a shade canopy were installed on Center Court by NJP Sports. More club improvements to come.
We would like to thank all of our new and old members for your continued support. It looks to be an exciting and fun season as we are working toward adding several new events and opportunities for members to participate in. Please let us know if you have ideas or would like to participate in a particular event.

Tennis Tidbits by Jackie Cooper 2009 U.S. Open Federer Vs. Del Potro Match
The reaction I am hearing most is that Roger Federer had a poor serving day. The stats support that notion. Buy why? I believe it was caused by Juan Martin Del Potro's ability to return Federer's good serves with authority, resulting in Federer trying to hit better serves and missing.
Del Potro visibly took a different approach. In the first set, his first serve percentage was 40%. In the final set, he was up to nearly 80%. He relied on spin serves and was able to take control of the point with devastating power and accuracy from both sides.
I hate to admit it, but I think that the double handed backhand wins out over the one handed. Particularly when you have a 100 mile forehand to go with it.
I should add that I still believe the two handed backhand player needs a good, one handed slice backhand to be a complete player.
In conclusion, Roger Federer is my favorite player of all time and likely will be favor to win another Wimbledon or two, but if Juan Martin Del Potro stays in shape and continues to mature, he may take over the number one spot.
